Best Tattoo & Piercing aftercare Guide

A tattoo or piercing is finished the moment the needle stops — but the result you carry for years is decided in the weeks after that. Healing isn’t a passive wait. It’s the second half of the work, done by you instead of your artist.

Note

A general guide based on typical healing patterns — not a substitute for your artist's or piercer's specific instructions. Always follow what they told you.

Protective Film vs. Open Healing

Tattoo studios use one of two aftercare methods. A protective film stays sealed over the tattoo for 3–7 days, holding in plasma while it heals underneath — cloudiness and fluid build-up are normal. Open healing skips the film: wash 2–3 times daily with fragrance-free soap, pat dry, then apply a thin layer of aftercare product from day one. Tattoos1960 artists choose between the two based on placement, size, and design.

Normal Healing Signs vs. Warning Signs

Normal
fading redness and warmth; mild swelling; clear or pale-yellow fluid; itching peaking around day 5–7.

Get it checked
redness spreading past day 4; worsening pain; yellow-green discharge or odour; fever.

When in doubt, message your artist or piercer, or visit any Tattoos1960 studio.

Piercing Healing Times by Placement

Healing time depends on placement, not on how carefully it’s cared for.

PlacementTypical healing time
Earlobe6–8 weeks
Cartilage (helix, tragus, conch)3–9 months
Nostril2–4 months
Septum2–3 months
Navel6–9 months
Nipple6–12 months
Lip and labret6–8 weeks
Tongue4 weeks

Looking healed on the surface isn’t the same as healed underneath — changing jewellery early is the top reason healing has to restart.

Tattoo and Piercing Healing Stages

Ink sits in the dermis; everything visible while healing — redness, scabbing, peeling — is the epidermis renewing itself above it. The dullness partway through is a temporary layer of new skin, before it thins and clears. Piercings heal the same way: the surface settles in weeks, but the channel underneath keeps maturing for months — change jewellery too soon and healing restarts. Pune’s monsoon humidity slows drying; dry summer heat pulls moisture out faster. Adjust moisturiser accordingly.

Tattoo and Piercing Aftercare: Dos and Don'ts

Light exercise is fine after a day or two; avoid swimming until fully peeled. Numbing cream doesn’t affect healing — tell your artist beforehand. Piercing jewellery should stay in until full healing time — six weeks to months by placement. Cover fresh ink from the sun until peeled, then sunscreen permanently — sun causes most fading. Implant-grade titanium or surgical steel are the safest metals during healing. A free touch-up usually fixes a patchy tattoo after four weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Light activity is usually fine within a day or two after getting a tattoo. Avoid heavy sweating, tight clothing, gym equipment rubbing against the tattoo, and direct friction for the first week. Do not swim or soak the tattoo until it has fully peeled and settled.

You can shower the same day after getting a tattoo, but keep the water gentle. Avoid direct high-pressure water, long hot showers, scrubbing, swimming, or soaking until the tattoo surface has fully healed.

No. Keep a new tattoo covered or in shade until it has fully peeled. Once healed, apply sunscreen whenever the tattoo is exposed. Sun exposure is one of the biggest reasons tattoos fade over time.

Often, yes. At Tattoos1960, every tattoo comes with a free touch-up once the tattoo has fully healed, usually after a minimum of four weeks. The skin needs time to settle before an artist can accurately see what needs correction.

Change piercing jewellery only after the piercing has completed its full healing time. Earlobe piercings may take around six weeks, while cartilage, navel, and nipple piercings can take several months. A piercing can look healed outside while still healing inside.

A metal allergy usually causes itching and redness where the jewellery touches the skin. Infection is more likely when there is warmth, swelling, pain, or discharge. If you are unsure, visit any Tattoos1960 studio in Pune instead of guessing.

Implant-grade titanium and surgical-grade stainless steel are commonly recommended for healing piercings. Avoid nickel-heavy jewellery, low-quality alloys, or jewellery not suitable for fresh piercings.
